Glossary

  • Axiom (a.k.a. postulate, assumption): A statement that is taken to be true, to serve as a premise for further reasoning and arguments.

  • Conjecture: A proposition that is proffered on a tentative basis without proof.

  • Definition: A statement of the meaning of a term. May not reference the term itself.

  • Hypothesis: A statement with the status of provisional formation, with the intention of being subsequently proved or refuted.

  • Proof: A logical argument that uses inference rules to establish that a statement is a logical consequence of axioms or theorems.

  • Theorem: A statement that has been proven.
